  8. Dear Friends
I too like to share my sincere opinion on Zero Degree, I am not a Literate Savvy to pass judgment on Charu’s work but still it elevated me, it took my understanding and my views to the next level. It will be difficult for us who are living in Pseudo Sentimental world of Religion, Politics, caste and Language to understand and agree with him. Unless we have very open mind it won’t be easy. I have read Zero degree in both Tamil and English. The novel is filled with thought provoking historical incident and Philosophy.

This Novel educates teenagers, enlighten middle ages and give comforts to old people. The key is to read each word by word, even punctuations. He forces us to pay more attention to our surrounding with that. The Novel in some part narrated in Satire style, unless we go in depth is very difficult to enjoy those brilliant moments. I have been reading every day for last 2 months, I could grasp50% of it only with the help of Google. Each name, incident, story have relation and gives new dimension to the Novel. I don’t want to quote example as it would be against post modernism (as told by my Malayali friend). That too chapter No15, narration runs to three pages without any punctuation, need to read breathless and conveying messages contrast too that. I can keep writing on this wonderful novel.

This is a study material for people who wants to become writer. Hopefully this will bring Tamil writers out of their self knitted web of Narcissism.

  10. Dear Suresh may I suggest you to Stop where you don’t understand, search for the meaning of some key words, phrases in Google, try to relate with the context. Do not compromise any thing with author; always question his intention and words. Charu will play and cheat us with his words. He will spare a sentence for Genocide and will narrate a page about sex.
Example in chapter 8, We need to know about “Santhal tribe”.
The Novel starts with "Dear Lady Readers", I think he is inviting everyone to read his novel with female mind set, It will be tough but worth putting effort to understand it.
Good Novel or Bad Novel depends on people. For a publisher a good novel is one which sells more copies, for some person a good novel is one which is easy to understand …and for me a Good novel is one which challenges my understanding and intelligence, and Zero degree is challenging me and proving my Ignorance.

Why Tamil which has 2500 years old Literature root is not able to produce a internationally recognized modern Literature. 2500 year old literature language which is one of the classical language should have given at least 60 master pieces after our freedom. We did not respect modern thought, alternate views. we remain as closed like a zero. Though we could see, we have Zero visibility. Though we say we are in a journey we remain in the same point and we don’t know that we are in same point because unless we broaden our views we can never realize that either we are in a p0int or in Journey.
Do you know he had restricted himself in using any numbers either in words or in numerical except nine and zero in this novel.
Read chapter 14, the first paragraph is about Peru Genocide the last Paragraph is about Sarajevo Genocide and in between you have note about future protagonist Echo. Find what is Echo, how that word came. Then you know who the real Protagonist, he is talking about. That chapter is a Painting. Not everyone can turn their text into painting, you can forget all the text but not the painting.

Reading Zero Degree should inspire young painters, actors, Film Directors, Writers, music directors and poets. Already this Novel is translated in English, more reading is done in other parts of world than in Tamil Nadu with passion. Passion will inspire and inspiration brings creation, fame… We will keep adoring people who can recite ThiruKural and who talks about 2500 years’ old literatures.

The author of Zero Degree have done a great contribution to Tamil literature. I see him as Bharathi of our time, we missed to adore the senior Bharathi let us not miss this time. Better to accept ignorance rather than broadcasting the painful work of a passionate writer as “ Kuppai”.

  11. Mr. Mrinzo:

I read your somewhat hyperbolic comments with some interest. In the interest of disclosure, I have read Zero Degree novel, and this has ben my experience.

The novel loosely strings together various injustices that we as humans should be concerned about. The language is abrubt, provocative, and is aimed to shock (much of the middle class values of Tamil readership).

I have refrained from commenting about the article to-date, because I am not sure I do get the book in its entirety.

You have remarked the following about the book:

    (a) " The Novel in some part narrated in Satire style, unless we go in depth is very difficult to enjoy those brilliant moments. I have been reading every day for last 2 months, I could grasp50% of it only with the help of Google. Each name, incident, story have relation and gives new dimension to the Novel."

In my view, such a cryptic clues do not add to any literary value of the book. With or without the clues, a good literary work, inspires understanding at multiple levels, and reveals an underlying common thread of humanity that people can understand. I did not feel that Zero degree accomplished that. It looked like a string of events put together in an artificial way to elicit a sense of shock.

    (2) You state that, " Do you know he had restricted himself in using any numbers either in words or in numerical except nine and zero in this novel."
So what? Why is this important? It is at best a literary device used by aspiring young students of writing! Can you eloborate on why is this so important (other than the fact that you discovered it?).

    3) "That too chapter No15, narration runs to three pages without any punctuation, need to read breathless and conveying messages contrast too that."

Again, why is this important. It is a style of presentation. If the content makes you read breathlessly you would not need to resort to such gimmicks.

    4) You state that, "the first paragraph is about Peru Genocide the last Paragraph is about Sarajevo Genocide and in between you have note about future protagonist Echo. Find what is Echo, how that word came. Then you know who the real Protagonist, he is talking about. "

There have been numeorous genocides in our life time Sarajevo, Darfur, East Timor, etc. I don't know what insight does the writer's book add to the general discussion? There have been courageous reporters who reported these events at grave risk to their lives to inform the world. There have been countless NGO's who risked their lives to directly aid/help the victims. Unfortunately, this book does not provide any insight into their suffering or human condition. It did not help me to understand the underlying human psyche that is capable of this violence. It was at best, a reporting tool. I came away feeling that the author simply used the genocide as another one of his shock elements - a final insult to those who suffered. A charitable explanation is that charu introduces such suffering to an emerging middle-class Indian, who has just conquered his hunger and is generally ignorant of what is going on elsewhere and near him. That is all.

I would be very reluctant to compare Charu with Bharathi. They belong to entirely different realms. Charu is a well-known columnist with literary ambitions, with an acute sense for injustice, and who can write about his personal experiences in a readable form. He is good at self-promotion, and his writing does not yet show the depth of understanding of the issues that he purportedly cares about.

Read a book about Bharathy. I recommend the book by Vaa.Raa!

    My $0.02c.
